About Us

The North Dakota Peace Coalition seeks to inspire everyday North Dakotans to transform ourselves, our relationships, and our communities. We believe the presence of peace and the absence of war are crucial human rights. We strive for an end to militarism not solely on behalf of those who live in obviously conflict-torn countries, but also on behalf of those of us in the Peace Garden State.

The movement toward a universal right to peace embraces the rights of all people. As Barbara Deming (1984), philosopher and peacemaker, has said, “It is not possible to affirm our own rights as inalienable simply by acting out: they are mine. We can affirm this only by acting out: they are ours — yours, and therefore mine; mine, and therefore yours.”

Purpose

Established during the nuclear freeze movement, the ND Peace Coalition has been an active proponent of peacemaking since 1983. The ND Peace Coalition is a multicultural, nonpartisan collective of 500 individuals across North Dakota (and beyond) who are committed to working for peace, human dignity, economic and social justice, and a responsible relationship with the environment — locally, nationally, and globally. North Dakota Peace Coalition activities consist primarily of educational initiatives and community-building, including an annual conference, website, newsletter, cultural events, activist training, grassroots organizing, and selection of the annual Prairie Peacemaker Award recipient.

To further mutual peacemaking, the ND Peace Coalition collaborates with a number of statewide organizations that are committed to nonviolence and human rights in various ways.
